LSC Statement Regarding the Removal of SRO’s
Dear Kelvyn Park Parents and Families,
On August 5th, our Local School Council (LSC) voted to remove School Resource Officers (SRO’s) from Kelvyn Park. Because our LSC is below quorum with six members, our vote was unofficial and it went to our Network Chief to make the final decision. Chief LeMone supports the LSC’s decision, and the two Chicago Police Officers who were placed at Kelvyn Park as SRO’s will no longer be in the building.
The Local School Council took this decision very seriously. Student, parent, community, and teacher feedback was solicited over two months to determine what was best for the students of Kelvyn Park. Based on that feedback, there was an overwhelming sentiment from each of these stakeholders that having the two SRO’s in the building would not be in the best interest of the students at Kelvyn Park.
This is in no way a reflection of the work of the two officers who worked last year at Kelvyn Park. At this time in our country, there is a strained relationship between the police and the citizens for which they serve. For many of the KPH students, just the presence of armed officers in the building causes emotional stress for our students and makes them feel unsafe. It is our job as an LSC to make sure that our students, our parents and our community members come into a building where they are made to feel welcome and the presence of the SRO’s seemed counterintuitive to this message.
The LSC stands committed to the school mission of empowering our students through meaningful relationships and by presenting boundless opportunities with a supportive community. Estimados padres y familias de Kelvyn Park:
El 5 de agosto, nuestro Consejo Escolar Local (LSC) votó para eliminar a los Oficiales de Recursos Escolares (SRO’s) de Kelvyn Park. Debido a que nuestro LSC está por debajo del quórum con seis miembros, nuestro voto no fue oficial y nuestro Jefe de Red tomó la decisión final. El jefe LeMone apoya la decisión del LSC, y los dos oficiales de policía de Chicago que fueron colocados en Kelvyn Park como SRO ya no estarán en el edificio.
El Consejo Escolar Local se tomó muy en serio esta decisión. Se solicitó la retroalimentación de los estudiantes, padres, comunidad y maestros durante dos meses para determinar qué era lo mejor para los estudiantes de Kelvyn Park. Con base en esa retroalimentación, hubo un sentimiento abrumador de cada una de estas partes interesadas de que tener los dos SRO en el edificio no sería lo mejor para los estudiantes de Kelvyn Park.
Esto de ninguna manera es un reflejo del trabajo de los dos oficiales que trabajaron el año pasado en Kelvyn Park. En este momento en nuestro país, existe una relación tensa entre la policía y los ciudadanos a los que sirven. Para muchos de los estudiantes de KPH, solo la presencia de oficiales armados en el edificio causa estrés emocional a nuestros estudiantes y los hace sentir inseguros. Es nuestro trabajo como LSC asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes, nuestros padres y los miembros de nuestra comunidad entren en un edificio donde se les haga sentir bienvenidos y la presencia de los SRO parece contradictoria a este mensaje.
El LSC está comprometido con la misión de la escuela de empoderar a nuestros estudiantes a través de relaciones significativas y presentando oportunidades ilimitadas con una comunidad de apoyo.
