Dear KPH Community,
A nation, divided. Again. Once again, we have experienced news that has further divided our country. The verdict of the Kyle Rittenhouse case has caused frustration, confusion, and contributes to a swelling anxiety in our community, in our homes, and in our schools. For many of us, this news brings more questions than answers: If Kyle were a person of color, would the outcome have been similar to the tragedies of George Floyd, Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright, and Breonna Taylor? How do we get better as a country? What is self-defense and who gets to define or enforce it? What implications does this ruling have on our community’s future?
Live our Co.R.E. Values. No one person can answer these questions alone. And not knowing is scary, especially for our youth. But I know that within our community, people work relentlessly to embody our Co.R.E. Values: Community, Relationships, and Empowerment so that our students can navigate the social issues that impact them in ways we understand and in ways we cannot possibly understand. We have specialists at the school who are trained to guide youth through these challenging times. But all of our staff and community are incredible listeners. Sometimes, that is what is needed most. Encourage our students to speak to an adult they trust because these issues matter.
Connect, listen, and empower. During this holiday break, I encourage everyone to think about a young person in their life and ask them how these incidents make them feel. Actively listen to what they are thinking and feeling. Let them know that it is ok to feel frustrated, or scared, or angry that we now have more questions than answers. And if you learn that the young person you connect with needs additional support, please call the school at (773) 534.4200. It is through these types of intentional connections that we build relationships and empower students. When students are empowered, they become an essential part of a solving today and tomorrow’s challenges. I am confident that our community has the foundation to accomplish this for our youth.

El veredicto del caso de Kyle Rittenhouse creó frustración y confusión que contribuye a una creciente ansiedad en nuestra comunidad, en nuestros hogares y en nuestras escuelas. Para muchos de nosotros, esta noticia trae más preguntas que respuestas: si Kyle fuera una persona de color, ¿el resultado habría sido similar a las tragedias de George Floyd, Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright y Breonna Taylor? ¿Cómo podemos ser mejores como país? ¿Qué es la “autodefensa” y quién puede definirla o imponerla? ¿Qué implicaciones tiene esto en el futuro de nuestra comunidad?
Viva nuestro Valores de Co.R.E. Ninguna persona puede responder a estas preguntas por sí mismo. Y no saber da miedo, especialmente para nuestra juventud. Pero sé que dentro de nuestra comunidad, la gente trabaja incansablemente para personificar nuestros valores de Co.R.E: comunidad, relaciones y empoderamiento para que nuestros estudiantes puedan navegar los problemas sociales que los impactan en formas que entendemos y de formas que posiblemente no podamos entender. Aquí tenemos especialistas que están capacitados para guiar a los jóvenes a través de estos tiempos desafiantes. Pero todo nuestro personal y nuestra comunidad son increíbles oyentes. A veces, eso es todo lo que necesitamos. Anime a nuestros estudiantes a hablar con un adulto en quien confíen porque estos temas son importantes.
Conéctese, escuche y empodere. Durante estas vacaciones, animo a todos a que piensen en un joven en su vida y les pregunten cómo los hacen sentir estos incidentes. Escuche activamente lo que están pensando y sintiendo. Hágales saber que está bien sentirse frustrado, asustado o enojado porque ahora tenemos más preguntas que respuestas. Es a través de este tipo de conexiones intencionales que construimos relaciones para empoderar a los estudiantes.
