Dear KPH Community,

Justice was not served. Yesterday, the Kentucky Attorney General announced the verdict that the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor were not criminally charged. This action—or lack thereof—is a monumental failure of our justice system. Despite recent nationwide protests against this issue, systemic racism persists. Depressingly, this type of injustice toward the Black Community is not new behavior from people in power; it has occurred for centuries. It must stop.

We still stand in unity and support our youth. In the school’s Black Lives Matter blog in response to George Floyd’s murder, we stated that interracial coalitions are needed to peacefully and effectively oppose systemic racism and actively pursue equity and justice for Black and Latino communities through unified efforts. As a community, we are actively listening to learn, share, and make equitable change. Our social workers, counselors, and other staff with expertise in coaching and guiding adolescents through daily stressors are available to listen and support. Please reach out if you or someone you know needs it. We are in this together.

Take Action & Vote. Some may feel anger, hate, confusion, disappointment, fear, or helplessness. Nevertheless, we can take action to secure a future that disrupts systemic racism—by voting. In Illinois, Early Voting in the 31^st Ward begins October 14 but Chicago voters can cast their ballot at any Early Voting location. In addition to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners website, below is some helpful information about voting for the upcoming Presidential Election:

• Check if you are registered to vote
• If you are not registered, Register to Vote
• Vote in one of 3 ways:
  1. Vote by Mail: Registered voters have the option to Vote By Mail.
     • Check your status to vote by mail.
     • Apply to vote by mail.
  2. Vote Early: Chicago voters can vote at any Early Voting location (you can also register to vote at any Early Voting Location).
     • Check the closest Early Voting Location. The closest Early Voting site to KPH is: Falconer Elementary School, 3020 N Lamon Ave.
  3. Vote on Election Day: The General Election is on November 3^rd.
     • Kelvyn Park is a polling place for the General Election on November 3^rd
