2021 Civil Rights Summer Fellowship for Students!

Dear rising 10th-12th grade students!

There is an exciting PAID opportunity from the Office of Student Protections and Title IX. The Civil Rights Summer Fellowship was created in partnership with Born This Way Foundation to provide 20 high school students a paid opportunity to expand their leadership capabilities, build community across the district, and shape Chicago Public School’s response to bias-based harm. Apply here if you’re interested, and read below.

This fellowship will focus on three initiatives:

  1. Fellows will work together with Born This Way Foundation to build out a #BeKind21 Calendar for their schools, share the message of the campaign, and participate in the 21 days of kindness. This calendar will focus on how students, families, staff, vendors, and community partners can promote inclusion and belonging in school buildings. The calendar and initiative will be shared across the district in preparation for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  2. Fellows will work together with the Office of Student Protections and Title IX to build out restorative practices in response to bias-based harm. This will include an introduction to restorative justice from the Office of Social and Emotional Learning, as well as the co-creation of talking circle or peace circle templates.
  3. Lastly, fellows will work to identify  appropriate community responses in events of bias-based harm. This will include brainstorming sessions and imaginative thinking about what the  future of CPS should  look like.

By the end of the Civil Rights Summer Fellowship, fellows will have developed new knowledge and skills around social justice, restorative practices, and policy creation. Most importantly, they will serve as a student liaison to their school’s Student Protection School Representative (SPSR) for continued partnership during the 2021-2022 academic school year.

Applications are due on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 3:00 PM. We are aiming to reach out to selected students during the week of June 14, 2021. Please see the attached information sheet to learn more about this exciting program.
