Principal’s Note

Dear Kelvyn Park Parents,

Over the past few months, staff have been exploring their core values, reflecting on the question “Why are you at KP?” Digging into the answer to this question and articulating our responses shed a light on all of our past successes while also providing a guide for the future. Additionally, these values help establish a strong identity that can lay a foundation for a supportive culture for all of our stakeholders at KP. Our CoRE Values statement is: “Through community, we build relationships to empower students; when students are empowered, they become an essential part of a growing and nurturing community.” The KP CoRE Values are:

  1. Community: We—current and former students, parents, staff, and partners—collectively support individual and communal growth toward continuous improvement.
  2. Relationships: We embrace our individual and collective diversity to learn more about ourselves and about others through nurturing connections.
  3. Empowerment: We enrich every individual with social, emotional, and intellectual skills to successfully navigate the world beyond the Kelvyn Park Hermosa community and, in turn, invest new achievements to ensure the prosperity of future generations.
    To me, these are more than just words and definitions. They are a way of life at KP—diligently aligning resources to collectively support all students’ growth and development. Please join the KP Staff in embodying these values at home. A simple place to start is asking your son/daughter what these words mean to them. Actions like these will go a long way in solidifying the connection and coherence between home and school.

Updates

Fine & Performing Arts Program Application:
I am very excited to announce that we were invited to submit a Final Proposal for the Fine & Performing Arts Magnet Cluster School program. Given the school’s rich history of success in the arts, our CoRE Values, and the program’s emphasis on the integration of arts in curriculum and the community, this is an outstanding fit. If we are accepted, the school stands to receive:

  • An additional art teacher
  • Additional visual and performing arts supplies
  • Implementation funding
  • Professional Development for the Lead Teachers of the program to strengthen the implementation and develop their leadership.
  • Professional Development for all teachers in Arts Education
  • Facility upgrades to dedicated arts classrooms (based on need)

The next steps for this application are for a site visit from CPS Officials overseeing the selection of schools, and a final proposal submitted by the school due 2/7/2020. A final decision will come in April 2020.

Post-Secondary

A message from the Counseling Corner:
Our School Counselor is Mrs. Jessica Andrick. Her role is to address the academic, personal/social, and college/career development of all students, including class selection to meet graduation requirements, college/career planning and exploration, and social-emotional supports.

Our College and Career Coach is Mr. Fernando Moreno. His role is to support students with college and career planning, financial aid, and any additional post-secondary needs of Kelvyn Park.

Key Dates

1/9 @9am-12pm, Parent Leadership Workshop:
Community organization COFI will host free workshops for parent leadership development in the Library on Thursdays.

1/15 @1:30pm, Triton College Representative Visit:
A representative from Triton College will be here to talk to our students about college opportunities

1/17 @9am, Coffee with the Principal:
Come to the school’s library to enjoy some coffee and chat with Principal Adams. All ages welcome!

1/18 @9am, Parent Workshop for Students with Special Needs:
Parents will receive helpful information about supporting their children with special needs at home.
